Anaphylaxis: A Serious Allergic Reaction
Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can happen very quickly—sometimes within minutes—after exposure to allergens such as certain foods, insect stings, or medications.
Anaphylaxis Can Range from Mild to Severe
Anaphylaxis is not the same for everyone. Symptoms can be mild, moderate, or very severe, and even the same person can experience different levels of reaction at different times.
Mild: Rash or mild swelling
Severe: Trouble breathing, sudden drop in blood pressure, or other life-threatening issues
Common Symptoms of Anaphylaxis
Skin: Hives, itching, redness, swelling
Breathing: Wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, tight throat
Stomach: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain
Heart: Dizziness, fainting, fast heartbeat
Other: Feeling anxious or confused
Symptoms can worsen quickly. Always take any signs of anaphylaxis seriously.
What Causes Anaphylaxis?
The most common triggers include:
Foods: Peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, milk, eggs, wheat
Insect stings: Bees, wasps, fire ants
Medications: Antibiotics, pain relievers
Other: Latex or, rarely, exercise
What to Do in an Emergency
Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency. Follow these steps:
Use an epinephrine (adrenaline) auto-injector immediately if available.
Call 911 or your local emergency number.
Lie down with legs raised (unless this makes breathing harder).
If needed, use a second epinephrine dose after 5–15 minutes if symptoms persist.
Preventing Anaphylaxis
Know your triggers and avoid them.
Always carry your epinephrine auto-injector.
Inform friends, family, and coworkers about your allergies.
Wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace.
Key Points to Remember
Anaphylaxis can vary from mild to life-threatening.
Epinephrine is the first and most important treatment.
Always seek emergency care after using epinephrine.
Proper knowledge and preparation allow people with severe allergies to live safely and confidently.
If you have questions about anaphylaxis or your risk, consult your healthcare provider.
